Testimonials
In the history of Valhalla Engineering, we faced a significant challenge when a company urgently needed custom repairs for two German-made hydraulic cylinders. These crucial components had rendered their plant non-operational, causing substantial financial losses.
Taking immediate action, I personally drove halfway to meet the customer's repair representative to expedite the process. With the damaged cylinders in hand, I returned to our shop and organized an emergency response in our hydraulic department. Upon inspection, we found the cylinders were bent beyond repair, and the required metric seals were not available in the United States. We quickly sourced a seal kit from Hamburg, Germany, and had it shipped within 30 minutes.
While the seals were in transit, we discovered that the piston rod was hollow and contained an internal encoder, a rare complexity. Undeterred, our team found a 10.5mm drill bit and precisely drilled a 36-inch hardened steel shaft to match the specifications. When the seals arrived, we assembled the components but found a critical bushing was missing. Within an hour, we milled a new bushing from bearing bronze.
Through exceptional coordination and skill, we repaired the cylinders and delivered them to the customer within 19 hours, saving them hundreds of thousands of dollars and significantly reducing downtime. This success story highlights Valhalla Engineering's commitment to excellence and problem-solving.
At Valhalla Engineering, we recently encountered a unique challenge when a customer requested a set of "Sister Jaws" based on a 1946 Japanese print. The order was for 36 jaws, requiring us to match the precise specifications of the aged print. Adding to the complexity, the print was in Japanese, and the specified metal did not correspond to contemporary standards.
The customer noted that Jaws from another CNC shop wore out much faster than the originals, which had been in use since the early 1950s. We started by designing the parts to match the print specs, but sourcing the necessary JIS 5111 grade BC6 metal proved impossible. Analyzing the worn parts, we found they were made from standard brass, which explained their rapid wear.
Committed to precision, we researched the foreign metal, discovering an obsolete Bronze alloy composed of aluminum, antimony, copper, iron, lead, nickel, phosphorus, silicon, tin, and zinc. Our search led us to a custom foundry with a craftsman named Jim, who remembered making this alloy years ago. Although the cost was high and left little profit margin, we prioritized exceptional quality over immediate gains.
With the specially forged metal in hand, our skilled craftsmen brought the Sister Jaws to life. Despite financial constraints, we delivered the Jaws on time and at no extra cost to the customer. These Sister Jaws have since outperformed the brass ones, prompting the customer to order three more sets to avoid future downtime.
Valhalla Engineering's dedication to exceptional quality has not only met but exceeded expectations, setting a new standard in precision engineering. Our Sister Jaws remain durable and reliable, underscoring our commitment to craftsmanship and excellence.
